Today 1st February marked world hijaab day which is an annual event founded by Nazma Khan in 2013 whose purpose is to encourage women to wear hijaab.
"Hijaab" is an Arabic word, meaning barrier or partition. The most visible form of hijaab is the head covering that many Muslim women wear, however hijaab goes beyond the headscarf but refers to the complete covering of everything except hands and face
Muslim women are required to wear hijaab in front of any man they could marry.
Concerning the hijaab Allah (T) said in the Holy Qur'an:
"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that they should not display their beauty except what must ordinarily appear thereof,that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers,or their husband's fathers,or their sons,or their husband's sons,or their brothers, or their brother's sons,or their sister's sons or their women or the slaves whom their right hands possess or male servants free of physical needs or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex..." 24:31
The Almighty Allah said also in other verse: "O prophet! Enjoin your wives, your daughters and the wives of the true believers,that they should cast their outer garments over their persons that is most convenient that they may be distinguished and not be harassed" 33:59.
The verse mentioned a loose outer garment (jalabeeb which is a plural of jilbaab) this means that Islamic dress code for women does not only consist of a scarf that covers the head,neck and bosom but also includes the overall dress that be long and loose, the verse indicates that the purpose of dressing this way is to recognised women as Muslims and not harassed.
When the Qur'an first mentioned the concept of hijaab, it was not as a veil or headscarf it was used in the context of a barrier as in the Quranic verse: "...And when ask of them(the wives of prophet) anything, ask it from behind a curtain(hijaab) is purer for your hearts and their hearts..." 33:53
CONDITIONS FOR AN ISLAMIC HIJAAB
1. It must cover all of the body
2. Must not be a display or transparent
3. Must not be tight
4. Must not be perfume
